In an attempt to correlate the designation of races of P. infestans and the genes, derived from S. demissum. controlling immunity to these races, the authors exchanged host material being used in the U.S.A., Great Britain and the Netherlands. This material was then tested with all the available races. The 3 series of differential host were inoculated with 11 races of P. infestans in Scotland, 8 races in the Netherlands and 7 races in the U.S.A. Thirteen distinct races are known to exist, 6 of which were common to all 3 collections, 5 were found in Black's collection, and 2 in Mastenbroek's collection. Four distinct genes, and various combinations of these genes, determine the range of resistant types involved. The authors propose to standardize the labeling of these resistant genes by using Black's nomenclature. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: A. E. Hannah
