Multiple matings with D. melanogaster in which each fly carries a different dominant marker gene show that the contribution of males to the next generation is more variable than that of females. This is due to intra-masculine selection which in turn results from the greater dependence of the fertility of males on frequency of insemination. This is shown to be a direct result of sexual differentiation. Hence intra-sexual selection is almost confined to males in the animal and even plant kingdoms.
