I. 1 Linguistics and Music Theory. Fifteen years ago, linguistics was the private preserve of a small number of anthropologists and philosophers, along with an occasional language teacher or intrepid psychologist. Today it has become a home for a large number not only of specialized "linguists", but also of mathematicians, engineers, and the loosely defined group in the "computer sciences". This migration has resulted both in new insight into language and the application of this insight to a variety of phenomena.
