In Mytilus edulis L. gametogenesis takes place in the mantle at the expense of the connective storage tissue. One of the ways in which stored reserves are mobilized for gamete formation is by controlled autophagy. As a direct approach to the study of the cellular biochemistry of the mantle tissue, we have isolated adipogranular (ADG) cells and measured changes in the biochemical composition of the excised mantle and of high-density ADG cells. The results are discussed in relation to the seasonal metabolic changes and the activities of the lysosomal proteinases Cathepsin B and Cathepsin L.
