Crack growth in fatigue analysis of ship structures is usually approximated by the Paris-Erdogan equation, parameters of which are found from tests and regarded as material constants. This results in deterministic life - crack length relations which may be non- conservative. To improve this, a stochastic model of crack growth is suggested. It assumes that the crack tip meets a random field of defects in polycrystalline metal, and that, in vicinity of the crack tip, a random damage filed is formed due to the load history affecting the crack extension. To support the model, crack propagation experiments were performed on specimens of low carbon medium tensile strength ship steel.
