Conway and Baumhammers4 and Saltzberg et al5 demonstrated the usefulness of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) in evaluating margins of dental restorations. The clarity and extreme depth of field of the views make the SEM an ideal tool for observing margins of cast restorations before and after burnishing or finishing. The merit of the SEM in such investigations is now well established. This study was conducted to demonstrate with SEM photomicrographs the effect of conventional finishing procedures and to show if any movement of the margins of gold castings occurs. The fit and adaptation of cast gold restorations before and after finishing on silver dies was compared with the fit and adaptation, before and after finishing, of the castings to the margins of the prepared teeth.
