The growth rate of mouse mammary epithelium declines during serial transplantation in vivo. Comparison of transplant lines in which cells proliferated continuously with lines in which growth was restricted showed that this decline in growth rate was related primarily to the number of cell divisions undergone rather than to the passage of metabolic time.
