Specimens in herbaria that have been pressed and preserved bear invaluable historical information for researchers of global change biology. These specimens are typically accompanied by collection date and location. Originally collected for the purpose of taxonomy, they have since been used to study a variety of ecological topics, including species distributions, phylogeny, phenology, and functional traits. Moreover, these specimens enable researchers to track ecological changes over time and across geographic regions. They provide insights into how plant communities respond to various environmental stressors, such as climate change, biological invasion, and habitat loss (Lang et al., 2019). The large number of specimens available has led to the formation of a growing number of global networks and systematic workflows (Davis, 2023; Johnson et al., 2023) to harness big data from these collections. In light of this, the scientific community is increasingly recognizing the importance of natural history museum collections in ecological research. They can help to understand the complex ecological interactions, and ultimately, inform conservation and management.
