Anamnesis PAINTING IS a struggle, a labour in the strong sense of the word as it is used in obstetrics, Arbeit as Freud used the term in relation to overcoming resistance. This work of painting strives to exceed the visible by means of providing us with a visual trace or sign. This is the paradoxical idea we must explore. A double paradox: chromatic material which will be unseen because beyond the visible, yet is colour. And, second, a gesture of and within substance, in and of the space-time that is extended through this very gesture – a gesture which is not the sole result of a conscious subject, namely the painter. Above all, the painter, like the woman or the analysand, has to labour to keep open the passage through which may come what has not yet come: the child, the past, the phrasing of colour in the present case, and which is nevertheless already potential life, possible memory or eventual chromatism. The subject who is aware works upon herself, with and against herself, to keep them all open to eventuality. The eye is ready for the pictorial gesture, prepared for what cannot be anticipated: the event. This is not because the gesture would erupt unexpectedly. On the contrary, it would have been expected and ardently wished for. But it is an event in that the subject giving birth to it does not know, cannot analyse and does not control. In the lexicon of Freudian clinical practice, this work is called Durcharbeitung, working through, perlaboration. It is important to distinguish it from the operation of memory, remembrance, mémoire, Erinnerung. Anamnesis and history keep present what is forgotten. The latter does this by trying to be faithful to the past, through its witnesses. Anamnesis is guided by the unknown, since it is engagement with unpredictability and invisibility that allows the event to happen. One can and must remember
