The dynamic mechanical properties of a silica filled methacrylate compositeas measured as a function of temperature. Changes in mechanical properties, particularly in tan delta, were correlated with changes in the adsorption behavior of the silane coupling agent, γ-MPS. It was shown that there was little change with increasing silane coverage until the amount of chemisorbed silane became saturated and the silane began to physisorb. The presence of physisorbed silane caused dramatic differences, due to reinforcement. It was also shown that for all cases examined, the silane was not dispersed throughout the matrix and therefore the majority of the silane stayed in the vicinity of the interphase.
