The discovery of prolactin as a human hormone in 1970 transformed our understanding of pituitary tumours. Using early workers were able to show that the serum prolactin activity was raised in many patients with pituitary tumours: some 60-70% of tumours previously con-sidered to be functionless were found to be associated with hyperprolactinaemia.'
