[For the entire collection see Zbl 0551.00012.] Dividing his subject into two parts: first considering the countries, the travel, the working places, the persons who influenced the trend of the work of Al-Khorezmi, and second considering the material, manuscripts, tables, treatises on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, geography, etc., the author compiled an excellent survey on the extant material. The text, however, is also impregnated by many remarks and excursions on topics not directly related to the subject, e.g. many etymological remarks which might make the hairs of a philologist stand on ends, even with ”al-jabr”, and though in the Old Babylonian period the six equations were treated comletely and by an ”algorithm” a relation with or an influence upon modern computers seems to the reviewer overdone.
