Some Thalassiosira species with undulated valves have been examined in light and electron microscopes, partly by using type material. Two groups of taxa are distinguished based on the internal valve structure. Thalassiosira lacustris, T. australiensis comb. et stat. nov. [= Coscinodiscus lacustris var. australiensis] and T. gessneri from fresh or brackish water have radial zig-zag paths of continuous cribra. Thalassiosira hyperborea together with the varieties septentrionalis from the Arctic and pelagica and lacunosa from the Baltic, has individual cribra. The possibility that var. septentrionalis and var. lacunosa are the resting stages of var. hyperborea and var. pelagica, respectively, is discussed.
