Ba(Fe1−xZrx)O3−δ single-crystalline films on (001) single-crystal SrTiO3 substrate were successfully synthesized. The films exhibited dielectric and ferromagneticlike characteristics even at room temperature. The saturation magnetization of the samples increased with increasing the Zr substitution amount. Especially for the x=0.8 and 0.9 samples, significant enhancement of the ferromagnetic ordering was observed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis revealed that the samples with strong ferromagnetic ordering contained a relatively large amount of Fe4+ ions rather than Fe3+ ions. In addition to this, we revealed the presence of the very small regions having the Fe-rich composition of BFZO within the BFZO thin film. The localized tetravalent Fe ions at these regions causing ferromagnetic superexchange coupling are speculated to be responsible for the observed enhanced magnetization of the x=0.8 and 0.9 samples.
