The paper presents an approach of modeling mode choice in the longitudinal section which was developed in the context of a multiday multi agent model of travel behavior. The challenge of a longitudinal mode choice model is the realistic reproduction of variability and stability of individual mode choice over time. This is important because mode choice is subject to individual mode preferences and routines. Using the mode variation index MIX the authors quantified mode variation in the seven-day trip diaries of the German Mobility Panel MOP. The authors also identified routines in individual weekly mobility reports that are associated with habitual mode use. Building on this analysis, the authors added elements to the utility function in the presented mode choice model that take the previous mode use of the individual into account. These additional elements are significant when estimating the model and hence contribute to reproducing stability in individual mode use when modeling longer periods of time. Finally, the authors present an application of this longitudinal mode choice model. It was employed which encouraging results in a seven-day multi agent simulation of travel behavior in a medium sized German city.
