Although discovered by Pierre Sonnerat in 1780 the scientific study of the aye aye has been relatively sporadic, especially during the first half of this century. In the 70 years previous to a series of quite recent importations and studies little research in the field or in captivity was conducted, with the exception of the research and field work of Petter et al. (1977).
