A single specimen of Paraplesioteuthis hastata (Miinster) from the Poker Chip Shale, Fernie Formation in the Rocky Mountains of central western Alberta is of early Toarcian (Jurassic) age. It is the first representative of the order Teuthida in Jurassic rocks from North America and significantly expands the geographic range of the suborder Prototeuthina, previously known only from the general area of Europe.
