This chapter considers how eye movement methodology has led us to better understanding of sentence comprehension since this technique can reveal the precise details of moment‐to‐moment processing during natural sentence reading. It reviews the progress beginning with a description of basic issues associated with eye movements and reading before considering computational models of eye movement control during sentence comprehension; factors influencing word identification during sentence reading; processing beyond individual words; and children's sentence comprehension. Sentence comprehension requires processing beyond the identification of individual words. An important process that has been studied over several decades is the computation of syntactic dependencies between words. Children's eye movements during reading differ in subtle ways from those seen in adults. Reading research using eye movement methodology is thriving. It is providing unique insights that are increasing our understanding of the nature of reading and its development across different writing systems.
