ResultsOf the 23 patients so treated, 9 recovered and regained perfect health. Consciousness reappeared 12 hours to 7 days after the institution of treatment. Of the 14 patients who did not recover, 13 died in 7 days or less without at any time showing even a slightly favorable response. The other patient, case 18 (SE), became conscious on the sixth day of treatment. Corticosteroids were discontinued on the 18th day because of marked ascites and edema. On the 24th day mental deterioration again occurred and she again became comatose on the 26th day. Administration of steroids was restarted at a lower dose (100 mg. of prednisolone daily); no favorable response was noted and she died, with deep jaundice and ascites, from hemorrhage due to esophageal varices. The postmortem findings in the 14 patients who died were those of acute or subacute hepatic necrosis. From tables 1 and 2 it may be seen that the patients who recovered had the following characteristics on admission.(1) They were young adults with an age range of 17 to 32 years (mean, 24.7 years).(2) The duration of the disease before the episode of coma was usually short.
