The previous chapter revealed that death was an affectively charged topic for European American parents and teachers in Centerville. Most adults believed that young children do not have the affective or cognitive resources to cope with death, and thus should be shielded from death and its associated rituals and representations. In this chapter we delve more deeply into the affective dimensions of death. First, we examine children's books as an additional socializing context from which children may learn about death. Next, we address yet another socializing context, namely parents' responses to their youngsters' questions about death. We then examine children's understandings of emotional dimensions of death as revealed in their responses to hypothetical death situations. The chapter concludes with a brief Discussion Section.
