As life span rises, dementia has become a growing public health issue. According to current estimates, almost 36 million people are having dementia worldwide, and this number is expected to reach 66 million by 2030 and 115 million by 2050. In affluent countries, the prevalence of dementia after 65 years is 5% to 10%. Vascular dementia (VaD), the second most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease (AD), accounts for at least 20% of cases. The prevalence of both VaD and AD rises exponentially with age, with the risk of VaD doubling every 5.3 years. There is a decline in incidence rates of dementia in developed countries, which has in part been related to improvements in prevention and treatment Stroke Compendium
