Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), as a new class of carbon nanomaterials, have attracted considerable interest because of their low cost, low toxicity, chemical inertness, superiority in water solubility, ease of functionalization and simple synthetic routes. In recent years, the excellent light harvesting capability and unique photo‐induced electron transfer ability have greatly inspired the perspectives of CQDs in photocatalysis applications. Herein, a comprehensive overview on the recent progresses of CQDs with an emphasis on their applications in photocatalysis is presented. Strategies that have been employed to increase their photocatalytic activities are discussed in detail, including doping, surface modulation, and design of composite structures. Moreover, some perspectives on the challenges and new directions are proposed to stimulate further research into this exciting and promising field.
