Tom Holland’s Rubicon: The Last Years of the Komtm Republic is a history of the fall of the Roman Republic written for general readers. With a doctorate froni Oxford, Holland made his name in Britain by adapting Herodotus’s Himstories and Virgil’s Aeneid for radio. He has written three novels, The Bone Hunter, S l c r v ~ ofMy Thirst, and Lord of the Dead, and he brings his public appeal and story telling ilhility lo this project. Writing before and after the terrorist attacks of September 11. 2001, Holland has publicly expressed his sense of being overtaken by history, as the tone of events since the attacks have paralleled the tones in Rome during the first century BCE, the best documented period of that Republic. The period h i 1 I06 to 27 HCE was a time of tremendous change arid opportunity, dominated by monumental characters of exceeding ability, great ;mibition, and overpowering lust. It was also a h e of great public danger and high psychological stress. Holland is at his best as a writer when he is constructing the psychology of the main characters i n the story and setting the tenor of the limes. His familiarity with the written accounts of the republic is extensive. He has examined the historical work of Appian and the ci)mmentaries of Caesar. He has studied the biographies of Plutarch and Suetonius, and the lettcrs and orations of Cicero. As a result, Holland like his Roman sources portriiys character and the happenstance of fortune as the central causative factors in the unfolding of historical events. Holland, however. is a modern novelist and a popularizer whose characters are drawn within human not heroic parameters. so that casual readers can identify with the participants in the republic’s
