11 of 24 mesenchymal neoplasms which have arisen de novo in patients with organ homografts throughout the world have involved the brain. In 8 cases the tumours were present only in this organ. 9 neoplasms were reticulumcell sarcomas and 2 were unclassified lymphomas. These lesions appeared sooner after transplantation than did non-cerebral mesenchymal or epithelial tumours. The brain has no lymphatic system, and little proliferation of reactive cells takes place in response to foreign antigens unless prior immunisation has occurred. It is suggested that tumour cells could arise in the brain itself or be carried there from other sites. The poor immunological reactions of the unimmunised and immunosuppressed brain suggest the possibility that neoplastic cells would grow more readily in this relatively immunologically privileged environment than in other tissues.
