torvumroots。
Solanum torvum, a wildSolanumspecies, is widely used as a rootstock and is known for its resistance to several pathogens and pests including root‐knot nematode (RKN,Meloidogynespp.). Virulence toS. torvumwas observed in severalMeloidogynespecies such asM. hapla, butM. haplapopulations isolated from Japan have not been tested for parasitism. We performed inoculation assays onS. torvumcultivars and control plants (S. melongena, eggplant;S. lycopersicum, tomato) inoculated with JapaneseM. haplapopulations, and we then evaluated the host suitability based on the eggmass number. The assays were carried out using nursery plants in small plastic pots. The first assay revealed thatS. torvumcultivars that are commercially available in Japan were susceptible toM. hapla. In the second assay, threeM. haplapopulations obtained from geographically distant areas produced a number of eggmasses onS. torvumroots. TheS. torvumcultivars were all resistant toM. incognita, as a control species ofMeloidogyne, in both assays. Our examination of the number of eggs per eggmass ofM. haplademonstrated that the values ofS. torvumunder inoculation of twoM. haplapopulations were significantly lower than those ofS. lycopersicum, implying some difference in the fecundity ofM. hapladepending on the host plants. The series of experiments revealed the virulence and reproductivity of JapaneseM. haplapopulations toS. torvum, posing a potential risk thatS. torvumcannot suppress RKN damage in agricultural fields under infestation of suchMeloidogynespecies.
