A study has been made of the mode of termination of the decussating fibers which in rat reach the entorhinal area, the parasubiculum, the presubiculum, one of the retrosplenial areas (29 e), the subiculum, the hippocampus, and the fascia dentata. The fibers were made visible by destruction of their site of origin, followed in three or four days by impregnation with reduced silver (Nauta''s original technic) showing up the degenerating fibers and, particularly well, their terminal parts. The exact distribution of the fibers, and to some extent their origin, has been mapped out. An introductory consideration of the normal anatomy of the regions studied is included in the paper. The terminal ramifications of these fibers turned out to end not diffusely through all layers of the cortex, but at definite levels of it exclusively, different in each of the areas studied. The transitions between the patterns of distribution specific to neighboring areas is sharp and coincides exactly with the interareal limits as determined on an architectonic basis. Some homotopic and heterotopic interhemispherical connections have been demonstrated in the hippocampal region. Several theoretically possible connections have been shown to be nonexistent. Two subfields only, in the region studied, receive few or no interhemispherical fibers.
