Provides a brief summary of two studies that examined questions of alcohol-tobacco interactions in samples of alcohol-dependent smokers. The aim of both studies was to determine the effect of cigarette abstinence and continued smoking on alcohol urges and mood states in alcohol-abstinent, alcohol-dependent cigarette smokers. Both studies yielded similar results. Although cigarette urges were reported at high levels, cigarette abstinence was not associated with greater alcohol urges among alcohol-dependent smokers who were in alcohol treatment. There was no evidence to support the hypothesis that alcoholic smokers would experience increased levels of conditioned alcohol craving during nicotine withdrawal. Among continued smokers, there was no evidence that smoking was used to cope with alcohol urges or that smoking either relieved or elicited alcohol urges.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
