The "area effects" in populations of the polymorphic land-snails Cepaea species on chalk downs in England, described by A. J. Cain and J. D. Currey (Phil. Trans. R. Soc, 246: 1-81, 1963), are critically discussed. It is concluded that they could have originated as "founder effects" by the random assortment of genes in small separated foundation stocks a long time ago, leading to the establishment of different systems of balanced polymorphism in the different areas, which where they are now in contact are maintained by genetical incompatibility. The large genetic differences observed need not therefore necessarily indicate the existence of as yet unidentified differences in environmental selection, as has been claimed.
