Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are characterized by a remarkable chronicity: virus was recovered from throat swab and urine specimens obtained from apparently asymptomatic children for periods extending from 15 to 24 months (1); in some of the children who survived neonatal cytomegalic inclusion disease (CID) viruria persisted for 3 years or more (2, 3); and in mice, chronic subclinical infections lasting 1 year after the intraperitoneal inoculation of mouse CMV (mouse salivary gland virus (MCMV)) have been reported (4).
