MATERIALS AND METHODSA total of 67 adult male albino rats (Sprague-Dawley) were housed in individual metabolism cages which rested upon large glass funnels leading to graduated cylinders for the collection of urine. The cages were provided with food channels leading to outside cups. Food, 2 which contained no measurable amount of ascorbic acid, and water were available ad libitum. Measurements of food and water consumption as well as urine volume and body weights were made on alternate days except when analyses were performed at which time daily measurements were made.
