The fine structure of the pole cells is contrasted with the blastoderm in Drosophila melanogaster embryos. A less dense cytoplasm, annulate lamellae, hollow spherical nucleoli and polar granules distinguish the pole cells. The polar granules are dense granular bodies, not bounded by a membrane and contain RNA. They arise in stage 9 oocytes during early stages of vitellogenesis as small dense bodies 0.2 [mu] in diameter, which become attached to mitochondria during the growth phase. This contact with mitochondria is lost after fertilization. A search for polar granules in the germarium and young oocytes did not disclose any that could be identified with certainity, but various other bodies, not bounded by membranes, are described.
