THE only a-substituted derivatives of menthyl acetoacetate which have yet been described are the azo-compounds (Trans., 1903, 83, 1114), which have been isolated in a solid condition and found to exhibit mutarotation in a very marked degree. All attempts to prepare the ordicary a-alkyl substituted derivatives, on the other hand, haw failed, probably because, as obtained by the ordinary methods, they are mixtures of fusible isomerides, that is to say, of the I-menthyl esters of the d-and 2-alkylacetoacetates.
