We investigated the effects of the addition of strontium-containing bioactive glass to a 4-META/MMA-TBB (4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitic anhydride/methyl methacrylate-tri-n-butyl borane)-based resin on the remineralization of etched enamel. Human enamel blocks were etched with phosphoric acid immersed in artificial saliva for 3 months with 4-META/MMA-TBB-based resin disks containing Sr-containing bioactive glass (SrBG). Nanoindentation testing of the enamel surfaces was conducted before and after etching and during the immersion. Plain disk, fluoride-containing resin disk, and conventional bioactive glass-containing resin disks were compared. After immersion, enamel surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy and the elemental depth profiles were determined by microscale X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of the etched enamel specimens fixed to SrBG-containing resin disks recovered significantly compared to those attached to the plain and fluoride-containing resin disks after 1 week of immersion. Although the immersed enamel specimens attached to the plain resin disks had very porous surfaces, the immersed specimens attached to the fluoride-, BG-, or SrBG-containing resin disks showed less surface roughness after immersion. Elemental analysis confirmed that the etched enamel surface was converted from hydroxyapatite to strontium apatite during immersion with the Sr-containing resin in artificial saliva. Thus, SrBG-containing resin adhesives can accelerate the remineralization of etched enamel.
