Several years ago, CROCI et al.(1973) reported that the human X chromosome carries a regulatory gene responsible for the extinction of glucocorticoid hormone induc ibility of rat hepatoma cell tyrosine amino transferase (TAT; EC 2.6. 1.5). We at tempted to confirm this assignment for the Chinese hamster (WEISS et al., 1975) and the rat (DESCHATRI m et al., 1979), but were unable to reproduce the observations of CROCI et al. We have therefore under taken to repeal their original experiments, that is, to study the inducibility of TAT in hybrids formed by fusing rat hepatoma cells with diploid human WI38 fibroblasts. Among the 14 independent hybrid clones examined, none showed extinction of induc ibility of the enzyme, while the human form of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD; EC 1.1. 1.49), an X-linked marker, was present in all of them.
