Juniper berries constitute the sole winter diet of the Townsend's solitaire (Myadestes townsendi). Nutrient content of Juniperus occidentalis berries is similar to that of other temperate zone berry-like fruits, but, because moisture is low, energy and nutritional content are concentrated and the berries offer more value per unit. Ripe berries contain an average of 4%o protein, 16%o lipid, 46%o carbohydrate and 34%o fiber and ash by dry weight; their caloric content is approximately 5 kcal per g. Juniper berries apparently provide both adequate nutrients and energy for solitaires during the winter.
