DiscussionThis case series demonstrates two patients who were clinically diagnosed with fibromyalgia following surgical procedures. Is it possible that what we know as fibromyalgia is indeed a widespread form of CRPS? There is evidence to show that fibromyalgia results from dysautonomia, leading to the multiple organ systems affected. Fibromyalgia is proposed to be a sympathetically driven neuropathic pain syndrome, and the manifestations of autonomic dysfunction may also explain the features of fibromyalgia not related to pain. There is an evident correlation that surgery or trauma can instigate the development of fibromyalgia, but it is unclear at this time what physiologic, surgical, or anesthetic mechanisms in the peri-operative environment may predispose to this disease state.
