Simulation today is a multi-million dollar industry and its application has spread to a vast number of training and analytical requirements. Many of those now involved with this industry have little concept of its origins and the efforts involved to gain recognition and credibility for simulation as a training tool. The use of Simulation for training now dates back over seventy years and as we now enter a new century, it seems appropriate to take a brief look at the history of this Industry. The origins of the Simulation Industry were generated from the use of flight training devices. This paper briefly outlines the evolution of the flight simulator and the efforts involved to gain recognition for its use, the establishment of standards and the constant demands of matching ever increasing technology. Without doubt the technology available for the simulation task to day and for the future is unbelievable by comparison to that of the past seventy years; however many of the problems such as data, parts and standards which have plagued this industry from its inception, are still evident today. Perhaps, therefore, as we enter this new century, it is appropriate to reflect on our history, so that organisations such as the SIAA can carry on the tradition.
