Modeling techniques for uncertain systems has been a major research component of the Dynamic Systems Project at IIASA during the past decade. The aim of the conference on which this volume is based was to give a variety of traditional and recent approaches to the problems of systems identification, estimation, and control in the presence of uncertainty. The main types of approach reflect the two apparently natural ways of describing the uncertainty itself which are either in terms of stochastic phenomena or in terms of set-membership relations. Both the stochastic and the deterministic approaches as well as their combination were presented at the conference. However, the set-membership approach forms the major part of the volume. The papers are divided into three parts according to their major emphasis: identification, estimation, and control. Each contribution attempts to cover methodological issues, new problems, approaches, and theoretical results, and constructive and numerical techniques. This volume provides a useful compendium of information for mathematicians and control engineers doing research on uncertain systems.
