The Michael addition of phthalides to chalcones employing a quinidine-derived thiourea catalyst Q-1 has been developed. The reported method led to the synthesis of 3,3-disubstituted phthalide derivatives in excellent yields, with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities. (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
