Male and female college students were shown photographs of smiling and crying infants while looking time, smiling and heart period (HP: defined as the length of time between heart beats) were monitored. Smiling infants were looked at longer than crying infants, and infants perceived as cute were looked at longer than those perceived as less cute. Participants'' smiling increased when the photographs were shown, but the amount of smiling was not related to the infants'' facial expressions or perceived attractiveness. Analyses of HP changes during the 1st 4 s of photograph presentation indicated that women showed cardiac acceleration in response to both smiling and crying infants, whereas men showed cardiac acceleration in response to smiling infants and deceleration in response to crying infants. These results are compared with those of studies of adults'' attraction to infants.
