A deformable spheropolygon-based discrete element method (DS-DEM) that combines the spheropolygon-based discrete element method (DEM) and the finite element method is developed to study behaviors of the deformable particles. Under the framework of the DS-DEM, an improved computational algorithm of the tangential contact force is developed. Moreover, an efficient contact detection algorithm is proposed to enhance the overall calculation efficiency for non-uniform particles. The proposed approach overcomes the defect of the spheropolygon-based DEM which is based on the rigid body assumption and can be used to simulate the movement procedure of multiple deformable particles. Finally, the results of numerical simulations including the element packing simulation, friction tests, the dynamic response of the beam, multi-body contact, and hopper flow test indicate that this novel method is versatile in capturing the physical and mechanical phenomena of particles including collision, separation, and deformation.
