The enteric nervous system is an independent integrative system that programmes and coordinates the various patterns of motility of the gastrointestinal musculature. The neural circuitry of this system receives sensory information from chemo- sand mechanoreceptors, processes the information and generates output that is appropriate for control of the effector system. These are functional properties that are usually associated only with the central nervous system, and in fact, both the structural and functional characteristics of the enteric ganglia resemble the central nervous system much more than the autonomic ganglia outside of the alimentary tract1.
