MATERIALS AND METHODSStudy population. The study group consisted of 105 full-term infants (56 girls, 49 boys) ranging in weight from 2250 to 4630 gm (mean 3274 _+ 550 gm) and 51 premature infants (28 girls, 23 boys) with birth weights ranging from 680 to 2900 gm (mean 2076 ___ 463 gm) and gestational ages ranging from 28 to 37 weeks (mean 31 _+ 6 weeks). All infants were examined during the first day of life and gestational ages determined using the method of Dubowitz. Five term infants and five premature infants were asphyxiated (l-and 5-minute Apgar scores< 5), and 15 premature infants had respiratory distress syndrome as defined by accepted clinical and radiographic criteria. Twenty healthy adult volunteers served as study controls. Parental consent was obtained in accordance with guidelines established by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Human Experimentation Committee.
