Need-free rats prefer sucrose solutions (0.3125, 0.625, 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 50 per cent) and saline (0.125, 0.25, 0.5 and 1 per cent) when each solution is paired with water. When two sucrose solutions are paired, the higher concentration is generally preferred. When two salines are paired, preference is a complex function of concentration within each pair.
