In this paper, we develop a theoretical framework to analyze the incentives of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) owners to trade SEPs. We
rst show that the size of a SEP portfolio determines an owners ability to charge royalties to standard implementors. We then study the causes and consequences of SEP trading.
