In their review, d'Ischia et al. explore the potential prebiotic source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) with melanin-like motifs, discuss the functionality of melanin in biology, and describe a comprehensive origin of life scenario centered on these primitive melanins [1]. Previously, Simon Nicholas Platts introduced a related PAH World Hypothesis in 2004 [2]. According to Platts, PAH mediated the synthesis of RNA, bringing about the RNA world. The melanin-like Primordial Multifunctional Entity (PriME) model builds upon extended PAH functionality in prebiotic chemistry and puts forward a detailed framework for future research. The authors exhaustively discuss the literature describing the analysis and structural determination of the insoluble organic matter (IOM) found in carbonaceous chondrites. Based on the referenced research, the authors reasonably assume that IOM was in ample supply on prebiotic Earth. A considerable quotient of the IOM consisted of PAH, the PAH comprised two or three ring systems indispersed with aliphatic moieties, reminiscent of melanin structure, rather than extended aromatic networks.
