BackgroundIn 1980, the Department of National Health and Welfare and the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (DNHW & CAOT) set up a task force to develop quality assurance guidelines for the practice of occupational therapy in Canada. The task force completed this specific task as well as undertaking the definition and refinement of the Model of Occupational Performance, the definition of many common terms for occupational therapy, and the development of process guidelines. Three publications resulted, which have been reprinted since into one volume entitled Occupational Therapy Guidelines for Client-Centred Practice (CAOT, 1991).
