.simple enough for the lay reader. On the practical .side the book presents some well-reasoned methods successfully employed by the authors. They emphasize that weight loss by the obese should be accomplished gradually, at an average rate not exceeding five pounds per month. They .do not prohibit particular foods, but reduce portions. Liquid is rationed. Eating between meals ("snacking") is frowned upon, but not prohibited: it is, however, limited to protein foods, such as salami, cold chicken, hard-boiled -egg, cheese and sea foods without accompanying bread or biscuits. The authors tell their patients that "the term "dessert' implies eating the food before leaving the table, but that if they retire to the television room with the food in hand it immediately becomes a snack". Drugs to suppress appetite are not recommended, but a simple "'psychotherapy" is given in some detail.
