Readers of this journal will need no introduction to the series of five British Workplace Employment Relations Surveys (WERS), spanning the period 1980–2004. Each survey report has contained fresh insights into contemporary industrial structures, processes and outcomes, and generated a substantial body of further analysis. The time series element of the surveys has proved equally illuminating, and in 2000, Millward, Bryson and Forth’s All Change at Work? used evidence from the first four surveys to argue that there had been a major transformation in the British system of industrial relations. The current volume (hereafter Evolution) is a successor to Millward et al. insofar as it aims to exploit the time series element in WERS to chart trends over time. It covers a wide range of topics, including employee representation, HRM, conflict, equality and diversity, and pay, to name just a few. There is an abundance of data with almost 120 figures and tables, many of which will prove invaluable for lecturers. Evolution differs from its predecessor, however, in three important respects: first, it is an edited collection with 22 contributors supplying its 15 chapters.
