Simple expressions are obtained for the total reaction cross section in terms of the interaction barrier for the s wave. These expressions allow the interaction barrier to be determined experimentally. Analysis of experimental data for heavy ions on U 238 shows that the effective radius parameter decreases as projectile charges increase.
